Hargrove) Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2022 22:23:03 -0500 Subject: [HamGatePA] One Month Report Message-ID: Good evening everyone on HamGatePA. Thank you to those who have responded to my queries and hopefully we all have a clearer picture of what could be done with your allocation. The video links to the TAPR DCC talks and the tutorials are only meant as examples and guidelines to the basics of amateur radio networking through AMPRnet. Only your imagination will determine how you will use your allocation in the amateur radio arena. Remember, while we can do some things like SSL encryption on the wired internet, we have to keep things in the clear on the airwaves. The use and subject matter on the wired links still need to follow FCC Part 97 "amateur only" rules as well as the ARDC/AMPRnet terms of use. Over the past eight years I have been the coordinator of the New York State allocations and organizing by counties right from the start helped to keep things easy to manage. Upon additionally acquiring the ten states that were managed by N1URO, I found that many of them were organized starting at zero and issued incrementally in /29, /28 and /27 blocks with small spaces between them. This hinders growth if a smaller allocation needs more space in the future. It also has a scatter-gun approach if there are those in the same county that want to link to each other. That is why I first went through the allocations to see which were still alive and which ones were lanquishing for years on the vine. Now that 90% of them are now cleaned up, it is just a matter of helping them to set up a public gateway and DNS records so that routing can occur across from one allocation to the other over the internet using encap IPIP routes. However, the process of reorganizing your state subnet into counties has been a somewhat "fun" and challenging exercise of the past few weeks. Each county will now get additional space to grow and branch out without bumping into another county. There are also subnet ranges set up solely for any BGP assignments plus some "spare" ranges that can be pressed into service for emergencies without bothering the current allocations. Those that will need to move to another allocation range to match the counties will get a private email from me with the details on how to proceed so that the changeover is quick and painless. Some have already done this without issues. My plans are to also set up individual webpages for your state with information, tutorials and pertinent links about networking, sample configuration files, various flavors of bbs software, etc. As you let me know how your allocation is set up with IP addresses and frequencies, we can create a map showing how things are tied together. If you set up one of your IP numbers that points to a service that you want others to see, then we can provide that link as well. Again, you are only limited by what your imagination comes up with. As always, use this mailing list to ask questions and share ideas with others in your area. "As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another." - Proverbs 27:17 -- Charles J. Is that device in your DMZ? It needs to be. DNS is important as well. The IPENCAP file is broadcast every 5 minutes I believe. Your device needs to see that file and store it in the proper location on your device. If you have ever had a chance to look at that file, it?s kind of like what you might consider a DNS file. It?s really a cross reference tool that shows how to get to your 44 net address(s) using whatever public IP address you have from your commercial ISP. In many cases this is done using a dynamic DNS client in case your ISP changes your current IP address. If you are fortunate enough to have a static commercial IP address that is not required. The IPENCAP files just says to others, hey this 44 net IP address is reachable through this commercial IP address. If you don?t have that IPENCAP file in your device, it has nothing to reference on how to get to your IP address. The DNS entries are part of that. While the file is sent every 5 minutes or so, it?s updated from the portal I believe every 2 hours. It is given DMZ from my router. I think I have the tunnel setup correctly now. Ampr-ripd can see the interface ampr0 and says the local ip for that tunnel is 44.56.26.1. I have primed it with encap.txt from the portal. In it's output it says "Using gateway 192.168.1.1 for direct 44net endpoints via interface wlp6s0" even if I force the ampr0. Do I need to add a gateway IP to the tunnel connection? Is it 169.228.34.84? Is it 127.0.0.1? I understand that the gateway should be routed at the other end of the IP tunnel, right? I get that I am absolutely clueless, but I'm gonna understand this one way or another. I really appreciate you guys trying to help me out. The rearrangement of the subnets to match the counties in your state has allowed alot more room for expansion and has unique subnets for BGP assignments. Anyone with a current BGP with an active LOA from ARDC will be able to keep their current subnet assignment. Some others will need to move to another subnet that can easily be handled. Take a look at your state's subnet plan by going to http://hamgatepa.n2nov.net If your subnet is slated to change, you will receive an email from me over the next few weeks to start the process. Those who do not currently have a gateway address set up on the AMPR Portal will be the first to be moved to a new subnet. As always, feel free to call me on 917-991-0356 any evening to discuss anything about your subnet. > Over the past eight years I have been the coordinator of the New York State > allocations and organizing by counties right from the start helped to > keep things easy to manage.
