From n2nov at n2nov.net Tue Jan 11 00:04:49 2022 From: n2nov at n2nov.net (Charles J. Hargrove) Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2022 00:04:49 -0500 Subject: [HamGateNJ] What is HamGateNJ? Message-ID: Welcome to your HamGate mailing list for all things RF digital. There are HamGate mailing lists for various areas of the Northeast from Maine to Maryland based on activity/allocations: HamGateNNE (VT, NH, ME) HamGateMA HamGateSNE (CT, RI) HamGateNY HamGateNJ HamGatePA HamGateMDE (MD, DE) This includes 44Net TCP/IP allocations, packet radio networking, various BBS flavors (BPQ, FBB, Flex, JNOS, Xnet, Xrouter, UROnode, etc), APRS, digital voice repeaters, etc. Basically anything that routes a message from one system or area to another. By keeping the mailing list limited to a particular area, it allows neighboring sysops the opportunity to get to know each other and work together. There are plenty of other mailing lists that are specific to a mode or flavor of software, but very little can be found that is more local. Our goal is to have every type of system share links and ideas to effectively move traffic (personal mail, bulletins, Radiograms, etc) in an organized way that is totally agnostic to the software and hardware being used. We strive to be forward looking without leaving anyone behind. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, but we can all help someone else to join in and participate. If you have a particular tech background that can help, we need to hear from you. A user account was set up for you on this mailing list based on your having a 44Net allocation now or at one time, a recommendation by a fellow sysop or you asked to join. This mailing list is public and open to all. You can unsubscribe at anytime as there will be a monthly reminder sent to you with your system generated password. As an introduction, my name is Charles Hargrove (N2NOV) and I have been involved with packet since the early 90s, set up the N2NOV JNOS BBS in 1997, founded the NY-NBEMS and USeast-NBEMS nets on HF in 2011 for using FLdigi modes for EmComm and radiogram messaging. I was the EC for Staten Island (NYC), DEC for NYC from 1999 to late 2003 (included Y2K, 9/11-WTC and the 2003 Blackout). In late 2003 the active members and leadership of NYC ARES went independent and formed the NYC Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Service for EmComm training and public service. I am deeply involved with Radio Relay International and maintain their website and traffic net database. I have been the 44Net Coordinator for NY State since 2014. Last week I was asked to take over 44Net coordination for the states that N1URO controlled after he suddenly passed away. I hope that together we can keep things going forward, help those who want to get involved, reactivate those who fell by the wayside over the years and build out a resilient RF network that will support any outage or overload in our various states. State emergency management agencies are looking for this resilience and many here are looking to do just that. Let's keep ALL of the lines of communication open between us. -- Charles J. I thought I'd talk a bit about how I'm using my Net 44 allocations to support hobby activities. My use case is different from the more traditional packet/AX.25 use cases that some of you have implemented. For several years, along with KB2EAR and others, we've built a digital multiprotocol voice network for radio amateurs. Some of the infrastructure is hosted on the FIOS fiber network and some is at internet cloud providers. Net 44 has made it possible to create a virtual network that supports the reflectors, transcoders, and other services. We have fulltime repeaters using D-Star, DMR, Fusion and P25 and can also be reached via the Brandmeister and TGIF networks. At the core of the system is the XLX020 reflector, available at 44.64.12.57 as well as xlx020.k2ie.net on the internet. If anyone wants to use a Net 44 based digital voice system (that is also reachable via the internet) to run a net to support tech or public service matters please let me know. We have the capacity. Typically you'll see traffic on Module A (Mid Atlantic) or Module D (Central NJ). If anyone needs a PPS stratum 1 time source feel free to use ntp @ 44.64.12.36. We use Net 44 to feed situational awareness data to the DAPNET servers. This is in turn fed to amateur POCSAG pagers through the USA, providing near realtime NWS warnings and alerts. See http://hampager.de. What else am I forgetting? I'll probably remember just after I hit send. It would be good to hear from others in the area to learn what you're doing. 73 Dan K2IE -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I know those shoes are big, having done the job of NJ coordinator many moons ago. I first got on what is now called AMPRnet in the late 1980's. Phil Karn, KA9Q, had just written his "net" program and people were starting to get on tcpip on 2m for the first time. Phil handed me a floppy disk and an ip address and I got started. 44.68.0.7 if I remember correctly. I stayed active until the mid 1990's after I moved to NJ. During that time, K2MF, W2NV (sk), K2LSX (sk), WB2KMY (now K2AD) and myself started up the EastNet Mafia which morphed into the EastNet network of today. After my move to NJ from Queens, TheNet X1J became a well used tnc operating system and we transported a great deal of ip traffic, not only in the local area, but via a wormhole to England, courtesy of WA2NDV/G1HSN and NBC News. While I was still active in NJ, I also assumed the ip address coordinator role using the X1J network mainly as the backbone network. ip encapsulation over the Internet had not been invented yet by K2MF before I became inactive. Fast forward 20 some-odd years and I'm back on AMPRnet, this time through an ipip tunnel server running on a raspberry pi. And, with my original NJ allocation, 44.64.24.0/24. Things have changed, some good, some not so good in AMPR land.... In the interim, I have been very active in AREDN Mesh work. I have been able to put together a "SuperNode" which connects almost 20 mesh islands together. On top of that network, I have built a pbx network of almost 60 pbx's worldwide with almost 400 users. In addition, using my experience with email last century, there is now MeshMail running on the mesh network. Finally, I have also experimented with hblink, dvswitch, et al, and have have done DMR completely on the mesh with no need for Brandmeister, and other servers. Over the last year or so, I have merged AMPRnet and Mesh and made each other network available to the other network. For the rundown, surf on over to http://n2mh-web.n2mh.ampr.org (44.64.24.194). If anyone wishes to play AT&T (AMPR Telephone & Telegraph) and has a sip phone, you can direct dial me by ip address at 44.64.24.251 73 for now, Mark, N2MH n2mh at n2mh.ampr.org MeshPhone 973-2111 From Jim.Kutsch at ky2d.com Tue Jan 11 16:05:49 2022 From: Jim.Kutsch at ky2d.com (Jim Kutsch KY2D) Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2022 16:05:49 -0500 Subject: [HamGateNJ] KY2D Intro from Morristown Message-ID: <000201d8072f$030de810$0929b830$@ky2d.com> It's great to find this list. Thanks to N2NOV for setting it up. Here's my intro. I started in Packet in the mid 1980s when I was at Bell Labs in Holmdel. I was working on the "Unix PC" project and had a breadboard prototype at home. My friend Paul, AD7I was the hardware designer on the TAPR TNC team so I got a beta TNC. I put the Unix PC on 2 meter packet and provided email and "Netnews" (Usenet) access to early packet users in NNJ/NYC. On the back end, the system was connected to CO-LAN, an experimental Labs collaboration with NJ Bell to provide hard wired 19.2K LAN service too home over the phone line. All that stopped in the late 1980s when work took me to Florida for 15 years of no ham radio then I returned to NJ (Morristown) in 2005. I now run an HF BPQ32 system that serves as the Radio Relay International (RRI) Eastern Area Hub for the Digital Traffic Network (DTN). It runs the BPQ32 software on Windows and provides HF connectivity through Pactor or VARA. I have a second BPQ32 system, KY2D-4, on a Raspberry Pi on 145.050 packet that serves as the RRI NJ DTN hub. That system can be accessed by digipeting through W2LI-2. The RRI philosophy for radiogram traffic is to stay with RF links except for occasional routing through manual intervention in special cases. I have FIOS connected for that linking. Somewhat related, I have an Allstar simplex node on another RPi with very limited RF range (a few blocks) plus an Asterisk PBX on another Pi. I do not have a 44 AMPRnet address range but have given it some thought. I flashed the mesh software into an old Linksys router several years ago but couldn't reach anything at the time. As for goals, I'd like to better integrate the RRI Digital Traffic Network access into the NJ packet network so other digital traffic handlers could reach the Eastern Area Hub. As more of a personal learning item, I'd like to better understand the advantages of using an AMPRnet address and would like to experiment with one. 73 Jim KY2D 973.723.3415 or HamShack Hotline 4231. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As Dan mentions, Outpost is an excellent program to use for messaging on any bbs on RF or telnet. On 1/11/2022 6:22 PM, Jim Kutsch KY2D wrote: > Hi Dan, > > Brian was incorrect. A typical DNS will always have your callsign followed by ampr.org. Anything before your callsign typically describes what is is used for. Some examples could be: n2nov.ampr.org gw.n2nov.ampr.org 220.n2nov.ampr.org webcam.n2nov.ampr.org While all allocation holders are part of a "mesh" by virtue that their subnet is linked to a public gateway, connections between us do not hit UCSD at all. Any use of the "mesh" IPIP encap table locally is via the AMPR-RIPD program to set up iptables as opposed to manually updating them. The encap table is broadcast every five minutes to anyone in the public gateway table with at least one DNS record. I personally use the DOTUN.SH script to set up the variables for setting up a tunnel on my Linux box, call the AMPR-RIPD program to accept the encap broadcast and set up the iptables. When someone is coming from outside of 44Net, they will enter through UCSD and the DNS table along with the gateways list will be used to send them to their destination. Your local security structure will expose certain ports or require passwords. My JNOS bbs has certain ports open for things like telnet, chat, ftp, POP3 and all others are set to deny entry. I then have each user's callsign in a table with their password. Anyone not in the table is allowed only the minimum permissions of reading messages or sending a message to the sysop, but no message creation or node hopping. -- Charles J. Both of these things are needed to route packets to and from your devices on your 44Net allocation. Here is a quick two page PDF tutorial that shows you how to do these things. The gateway entry is done by you in your AMPR Portal account and the DNS records are emailed to me for submission to the DNS database. -- Charles J. I have added him to this mailing list as there are UROnode, Flexnet, Xnet systems across the northeast. Conversations with him over many years shows that he thinks along the same way as I do. The network needs to be agnostic to the software as long as we can talk to each other, route to each other and pass along messages to each other. I am sure that he will jump in soon to introduce himself and get some interesting conversations going as we look forward to the future of networking and not stay stuck in the 90s. -- Charles J.
